Dog-friendly beaches near Lisbon.

Where your dog can go to the beach in Greater Lisbon, and the rules that matter before you go. In short: outside the bathing season it is easier; during it, only on beaches that allow it.

01The rules

Before taking your dog to the beach

During the bathing season — usually June to September, with dates that vary by municipality — most lifeguarded beaches do not allow dogs. Outside it, it depends on each council’s rules and the signs at the entrance.

So the golden rule: always check the sign at the beach and the season’s notice. The list below gathers the beaches the map marks as open to dogs, but a new sign beats the map.

And on the sand the usual rules apply: lead until you see how the beach is, pick up after your dog, fresh water to drink and shade in the hot hours — the sand burns paws long before it burns feet.
